Eared Dove. Zenaida auriculata.- To 3200 m above Quito. A plain, midsized dove common in semiopen and agricultural areas as well as towns and cities in more arid highlands, smaller numbers also in drier lowlands of west. Bill black; legs coral pink.

Above dull brown with bluish gray crown, two dark spots on ear-coverts (the “ears”), and purple iridescence on neck. Wings with several large black spots on tertials; graduated tail broadly tipped and edged white (conspicuous in flight). Below pale vinaceous, lower belly pale buff.

Eared Dove. Zenaida auriculata.- Conspicuos in some areas, specially in settled parts of highlands where locally becomes quite tame; regularly perches on buildings and wires. Potters about on ground, head nodding back and forth, often in small groups; larger flocks congregate to feed on agricultural fields. Flight strong and fast, flocksoften winging past overhead.

Not specially vocal, merely giving a subdued cooing “whoo-oo” that does not often attract attention.
