Vilcabamba, inspired by a 1955 article in the USA publication, Reader´s Digest, which sited Vilcabamba as an island of immunity from heart disease with an unusually high incidence of robust and active centenaries, physicians from the world over began to study the population and concluded that the combination of a healthy diet, aerobic exercise, natural mineral waters, and contamination free environment were the main factors contributing contributing to the long, healthy lives of the valley´s residents.
