Galápagos: Things No One Warns You About. A trip to the Galápagos Islands is undoubtedly fascinating — from its landscapes and wildlife to its birds and beaches. However, sometimes (though not always), part of your trip may become uncomfortable or even painful, especially when traveling between islands by high-speed boats or ferries.
As a tour operator in mainland Ecuador who has also organized trips to Galápagos, I want to share an important detail based on my personal experience and that of many travelers: island-to-island transfers can pose physical challenges, particularly for people with back problems, limited mobility, or seniors over the age of 70 or 80+.
Here’s a specific tip: Avoid sitting in the front or middle rows of the boat. If possible, always ask to be seated in the back. The difference is significant.
These boats often travel at high speeds, and when the sea is rough, the pounding of the hull against the waves creates a strong jolt — especially in the front seats. This can cause discomfort or even pain in the back, neck, or joints.
I once shared my concern with local operators in Galápagos, and one of them told me about an elderly couple who had such a bad experience on the boat that they chose to return by helicopter. That story only confirmed what I had observed myself: this issue is real and important, especially for older travelers.
This is not a critique of Galápagos operators, but rather a call for greater care and awareness when handling travelers with special needs. In my own tours across mainland Ecuador, we always prioritize the safety and comfort of our guests — especially those over 60, 70, and 80+.
I hope this message helps both travelers and the tourism community improve the experience for all.
