The Jocotoco Antpitta is one of Ecuador’s most iconic and rare species. First described in 1999, its global population is estimated at only 480–600 individuals, confined to a range of just 250 km² in southern Ecuador.
It is a large antpitta, only slightly smaller than the Giant Antpitta (Grallaria gigantea). The bird in this photo is a juvenile: adults show larger white cheek patches and lack the brown nape seen in younger individuals.
This is the last sixth antpitta from this trip to Ecuador.
