Cloud Forests Filled with Color
Our journey begins in the highlands of Northern Ecuador, ascending the slopes of Rucu Pichincha to the renowned Yanacocha Reserve, where we explore cloud forest and páramo habitats at elevations of nearly 3,900 meters.
Here, surrounded by misty forests and dramatic Andean landscapes, we search for some of Ecuador’s most remarkable high-elevation birds. Mixed flocks of colorful tanagers move through the trees, while species such as the Tawny Antpitta, Andean Guan and, with a bit of luck, the elusive Andean Pygmy Owl may reveal themselves along the trails.
Yanacocha is also a paradise for hummingbird lovers. The reserve offers excellent opportunities to observe dazzling species including the Sapphire-vented Puffleg, Sword-billed Hummingbird, Great Sapphirewing and Buff-winged Starfrontlet, among many others. Colorful tanagers are equally impressive, with species such as the Hooded Mountain Tanager, Grass-green Tanager, Black-chested Mountain Tanager and Scarlet-breasted Mountain Tanager adding brilliant flashes of color to the cloud forest.
Taking time to quietly watch these birds at close range is one of the true highlights of a slow-birding experience in the Ecuadorian Andes.
Mindo: Antpittas, Toucans and Hummingbirds
After the high Andes, our journey descends into the famous cloud forests of Mindo, where the pace slows even further and every trail offers new photographic opportunities. This region is internationally celebrated for its extraordinary diversity of hummingbirds, tanagers, toucans and antpittas.
One of the highlights is the unforgettable Giant Antpitta, often observed at close range, allowing exceptional opportunities for photography and careful observation. The surrounding forests may also reveal spectacular species such as the Andean Cock-of-the- rock, Toucan Barbet, Plate-billed Mountain Toucan, Golden-headed Quetzal, Masked Trogon and numerous brilliantly colored tanagers.
Comfortable accommodation at Sachatamia Lodge provides a peaceful base for exploring the cloud forest while enjoying excellent birdwatching directly from the gardens and feeders.
Andean Landscapes Around Antisana
Continuing through the northern Andes, we visit the dramatic landscapes surrounding Antisana, where volcanoes, high-altitude lakes and open páramo create a completely different birding experience.
This region is one of the best places in Ecuador to observe species adapted to the harsh conditions of the high Andes, including the spectacular Andean Condor, Black-faced Ibis, Carunculated Caracara, Andean Lapwing and the beautiful Ecuadorian Hillstar.
With fewer travel hours and plenty of time for observation, this part of the journey perfectly reflects the spirit of slow birding: enjoying the landscape as much as the birds themselves.
Into the Amazon Rainforest
Our journey then descends into the Amazon Basin, where the forests become taller, richer and filled with new sounds and colors. Around Wildsumaco and the Napo River, bird diversity increases dramatically, offering opportunities to observe antbirds, toucans, parrots, cotingas and many other Amazonian specialties.
Staying in carefully selected lodges, we explore forest trails, canopy viewpoints and river habitats at a relaxed pace, allowing time for photography, listening to bird vocalizations and enjoying the extraordinary atmosphere of the Amazon.
