Podocarpus National Park Tours – Birds, Nature & Day Tours

Podocarpus National Park and the tropical forests around Zamora offer one of the most fascinating birding experiences in Southern Ecuador. From Loja, the journey takes approximately one hour as we travel through the high Andes and descend through the eastern foothills, with spectacular mountain landscapes along the way. As we reach the lower elevations around the Bombuscaro River, the scenery changes dramatically and the lush tropical forests of Podocarpus National Park begin to appear.

This day tour focuses on the remarkable birdlife of Podocarpus National Park and the forests and surrounding areas of Zamora, where the eastern Andes meet the Amazon Basin. Along the way, we will look for some of the region’s most emblematic birds, as well as a wonderful variety of colorful tanagers, hummingbirds, toucans, antbirds and other forest species.

The combination of spectacular scenery, tropical forest and exceptional bird diversity makes this an unforgettable birding experience for both birdwatchers and bird photographers.

Birds of Podocarpus National Park, the Bombuscaro River and the Zamora Area

The forests of Podocarpus National Park and the surrounding areas of Zamora are home to an extraordinary variety of birds. As we move through different elevations and habitats, we have the opportunity to look for some of the most emblematic species of Southern Ecuador, together with a remarkable diversity of colorful tanagers, hummingbirds and forest birds.

Among the species we may look for are the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, Torrent Duck, Wire-crested Thorntail, Blue-necked Tanager, Amazonian Umbrellabird, Coppery-chested Jacamar and White-capped Dipper, along with many other species that inhabit the forests and river valleys of the eastern Andes.

The birding experience is not limited to a particular group of birds. We will keep our eyes and ears open for hummingbirds visiting flowers, tanagers moving through the vegetation, toucans calling from the canopy, antbirds in the forest understory and other species that may appear unexpectedly along the trails and roads.

For bird photographers, the area also offers excellent opportunities to spend time observing birds in their natural surroundings while enjoying the spectacular scenery of the eastern slopes of the Andes.
