World Migratory Bird Day, celebrated on October 10, 2026, was an opportunity to explore the birdlife of Ecuador’s southern coast. I traveled from Huaquillas to Puerto Hualtaco and continued by boat for approximately 45 minutes to Costa Rica Island, part of the Jambelí Archipelago in El Oro Province.
This personal outing was also an opportunity to appreciate the region’s birdwatching potential and highlight coastal destinations that deserve greater attention from birdwatchers and wildlife photographers visiting Ecuador.
Costa Rica Island offers a fascinating glimpse into the birdlife of Ecuador’s southern coast. During my visit, I observed a variety of coastal birds, from the impressive Magnificent Frigatebird and elegant Inca Tern to herons, ibises, shorebirds and gulls.
Among the highlights were the Magnificent Frigatebird, Little Blue Heron, Tricolored Heron, White Ibis, Whimbrel, Inca Tern, Semipalmated Sandpiper, Roseate Spoonbill and Kelp Gull. These observations revealed the diversity of birds that can be found while exploring the coastal environments of the Jambelí Archipelago.
For birdwatchers and wildlife photographers, places like Costa Rica Island offer an opportunity to discover a different side of Ecuador’s avifauna, away from the better-known Andean forests and Amazonian rainforests.

The mangroves, tidal channels and coastal wetlands of southern Ecuador provide valuable habitats for birds throughout the year. For migratory shorebirds, these environments can offer places to feed and rest during their long journeys between breeding and wintering grounds.
World Migratory Bird Day highlights the importance of protecting these habitats and recognizing the role they play in the survival of migratory species. Exploring Costa Rica Island was a reminder of how much there is to discover and appreciate along Ecuador’s southern coast.
Beyond its importance for migratory birds, Ecuador’s southern coast offers an interesting setting for birdwatching and wildlife photography. The combination of coastal habitats, estuaries, mangroves and islands creates opportunities to discover birds in a landscape very different from the cloud forests and highlands for which Ecuador is widely known.
For travelers interested in exploring less familiar birding destinations, Costa Rica Island and the Jambelí Archipelago deserve greater attention. Places like these offer an opportunity to appreciate the diversity of Ecuador’s coastal birdlife and inspire further exploration of the region.
Southern Ecuador offers much more than its better-known birding destinations. Its coastal landscapes, mangroves, wetlands and islands provide interesting opportunities for birdwatching and bird photography.
