Distribution

Blue and White Swallow, Pygochelidon cyanoleuca.- Common and widespread in open and semiopen areas in highlands (but not in paramo); a few occur down into lowlands, in east only as an austral migrant (Apr – sept). The most frequently seen swallow in built – up and agricultural areas in highlands.

 

Description

12 – 12, cm. Entirely glossy steel blue above and white below with obvious black crissum. Juvenile browner above, sometimes some dusky spotting on chest. Austral migrants have black on crissum restricted to its sides.

 

Habits.

 

A familiar, tame, and conspicuous swallow, often seen perching on wires and fences. Nests, regularly in small colonies, in holes in banks and building.
