Birding Trip report southern Ecuador december 2022

Itinerary
13 nights – 14 days
Places to visit:
Northern Ecuador: Mindo Area (4000 feet ). Milpe, Silanche, Angel Paz, Mashpi
Antisana Reserve – Laguna la Mica: (3900 meters – 12795 feet). Yanacocha Reserve: (3200 -4400 meters – 10498 – 1435 feet).
Southern: Ecuador: Tapichalaca Reserve:  (2500 m- 8200 feets),  Zamora Chinchipe Province – Bombuscaro River – Podocarpus National Park – Copalinga Reserve (900 m – 2950 feets.)   Buenaventura Reserve (500-1300 m, 1640-4265 feets). Laguna la Tembladera (Sta Rosa)
 
Day 1. December 4th. Antisana Reserve
Day 2, Decemb 5th. Flight Quito – Loja . 06h00 am arrival to Catamayo Airport. Bird around Catamayo Dry forest. Head to Tapichalaca. 1 night       Casa Simpson
Day 3.Dec. 6.   Bird at Tapichalaca in the morning, and heat to Copalinga Reserve. 3 nights        Copalinga Lodge
Day 4. Dec. 7. Copalinga Reserve, Podocarpus National Park (Bombuscaro River ). Copalinga Lodge, 3 nights
Day 5. Dec. 8,  Copalinga Reserve, Podocarpus National Park (Bombuscaro River ). Copalinga Lodge
Day 6.  Dec. 9.  Copalinga Reserve, Podocarpus National Park (Bombuscaro River ). 11h00 head to Buenaventura Reserve. 3 nights. Umbrella Bird Lodge
Day 7. Dec. 10. Buenaventura Reserve. Umbrella Bird Lodge
Day 8. Dec. 11: Buenaventura Reserve. Umbrella Bird Lodge
Day 9. Dec. 12: Buenaventura Reserve . head to Catamayo Airport ´flight to Quito. At 5h30pm. Head to Mindo loma.
Day 10. Dec: 13 Angel Paz Reserve – Milpe.    Mindo Loma
Day 11 Dec. 14 Silanche- Mindo Loma
Day 12  Dec. 15 Mindo Loma. Mindo Loma
Day 13  Dec. 16 Mashpi Road.    Mindo Loma
Day 14  Dec. 17 Yanacocha Reserve -Old Nono Mindo Road, End.
 

This was a nice trip combinig North and southern Ecuador visiting private reserves: Antisana Reserve; Mindo Area: Silanche, Milpe, Angel Paz, Mashpi. Podocarpus National Park and Jocotoco Reserves. Laguna la Tembladera. There were more than 500 species registered in southern Ecuador.

This trip was made starting on december 4th in Antisana Reserve, then continuing to the south Ecuador staying in the Jocotoco Reserves for 8 days and then flying back to Quito to continue the trip in Mindo Area finishing on dec 17th. Our participant for this trip was Elizabeth Ferber a very entusiastic woman which together with Pablo Andrade worked extremely almost without stopping looking for birds observed and heard. As a result Elizabeth ended up observing more than 500 species in Ecuador, and  she has a record of 1,658 species in 12 countries, which put her at #56 on the Top 100 World eBirders in 2022. She is also at the top 10 of women birders according to the list as well.

A little summary of remarkable and emblematic birds for this trip: Although the list is large we mention just some of them: Andean  Condor, Horned Screamer, Broad-winged Hawk, Sabana Hawk, Harri´s Haw, White-tailed Kite, Gray-backed Hawk, White-throated Screech-Owl, Band-bellied Owl, Black-and-white Owl, Pacific-pygmy Owl, Blackish Nightjar, Lyre-tailed Nightjar, Chestnut-mandibled Toucan, Choco Toucan, Pale-mandibled Aracari, White-necked Parakeet , Golden-plumed Parakeet, El Oro Parakeet, Crimson-bellied Woodpecker, Golden-headed Quetzal, Lafresnaye´s Piculet, Olivaceous Piculet, Ecuadorian Piculet, Spangled Coquette, Little Sunangel, Velvet-purple Coronet, Amazonian Umbrellabird,  Tawny antpitta, Giant Antpitta, Jocotoco Antpitta, Watkin´s Antpitta, Chusquea Tapaculo, Ash-colored Tapaculo, Elegant-crescent Chest, Toucan Barbet, Black-billed Mountain Toucan, Thrush-like Schiifornis,  Striped Manakin, Club-winged Manakin, White-bearded Manakin, Wing-barred Piprites, Pacific Royal Flycatcher, , Lanceolated Monklet, Coppery-chested Jacamar, Andean Cock-of-the-rock, Chapman´s Antshrike, Tumbesian Tyrannulet, Black Solitaire, Moss-backed Tanager, Glistening-green Tanager, Paradise Tanager, Orange-eared Tanager, Flame-faced Tanager,
